Take one antique lace-trimmed handkerchief: slice it in half on the diagonal, make a hand-rolled hem on the raw edge, and voila – a lace-edged 18th Century kerchief for an American Girl doll!
Wasn’t that easy?
(Appropriate Historical Notes: A covered decolletage was an essential item of dignified modesty for the 18th Century Lady. This covering was known as a fichu, or a kerchief. (Both words sound like a sneeze. But no blowing noses on these, thank you – they’re not that kind of kerchief!) When a lady has an opportunity to add a little extra (a LOT of extra) decoration to their ensemble, these fichus (or kerchiefs, or sneezes) become VERY decorated indeed!)
What then, is an American Girl doll to do but decorate herself accordingly?
